ABOUT Tracey
Tracey Prioste is an Australian charcoal realism artist whose practice centres on figurative portraiture, equine and wild feline studies. Working primarily in charcoal, she explores the quiet authority that exists beneath restraint — where strength is felt rather than declared.
Her works are defined by hyper-real monochrome detail interrupted by buried black/darkness. The charcoal is not applied decoratively; it is partially obscured within shadow and surface, emerging subtly as a symbol of resilience, survival, and contained power.
Through both women, horses and wild cats, Prioste draws a conceptual parallel between human endurance and predatory grace. Each subject is rendered with precision and restraint, allowing emotion and presence to surface through controlled contrast and light.
Her wild cat artworks received personal recognition in a handwritten letter from Sir David Attenborough, acknowledging the emotional depth of her animal portrayals. She has also been awarded Highly Commended at the Camden Art Prize and by the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW (RAS NSW).
Prioste releases her work in limited bodies, maintaining a focused and intentional studio practice. Each series is developed as a cohesive exploration of strength beneath shadow — a recurring theme that continues to shape her evolving visual language.
She lives and works in Camden NSW, Sydney, Australia.
